Loyola Athletics Announces Hall Of Fame Class Of 2018

Davis, Holbrook, Moore, Morote-Ariza to be inducted February 24

CHICAGO (November 27, 2017) – Four former Rambler student-athletes will be inducted into the Loyola University Chicago Athletics Hall of Fame on February 24, 2018. This year's class includes a former NBA player, an Academic All-American, two-time national champion and an Honorable Mention All-America selection.

As a student-athlete, Shane Davis (2000-03) set the Loyola men's volleyball career record with 5,337 assists and ranks among the program's all-time leaders with 723 digs and 286 service aces. During his four-year playing career, the Denver, Iowa native led the Ramblers to an overall record of 78-35 (.690) and a share of the 2002 Midwestern Intercollegiate Volleyball Association (MIVA) regular-season title. An American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) Second Team All-America selection in 2003, Davis was a three-time First Team All-MIVA selection at setter, and as a senior, dished out 1,289 assists, while also racking up 132 digs, 68 blocks and a .432 (102-20-190) hitting percentage.

Davis went on to become the head coach of the Loyola men's volleyball program immediately following the completion of his playing career and graduation in 2003 and spent 12 seasons at the helm, departing Rogers Park in 2015 as the Ramblers' all-time winningest coach with a 265-88 (.751) record. He piloted Loyola to three straight NCAA Final Four appearances (2013, 2014, 2015), including back-to-back NCAA titles in 2014 and 2015. The 2014 AVCA Coach of the Year produced 12 All-Americans, 43 All-MIVA picks and a 2016 Olympic bronze medalist (Thomas Jaeschke). Davis is the first men's volleyball student-athlete or coach to be inducted into the Loyola Athletics Hall of Fame and currently serves as the head women's volleyball coach at Northwestern University.

Lauren Holbrook (2001-04) left an indelible mark on the Loyola women's volleyball program, graduating in 2004 as one of the most decorated players in Rambler history. A native of Indianapolis, the setter was the quarterback of the team during one of the most successful runs in program annals, leading Loyola to an 87-37 (.702) record during her four-year career.

A four-time All-Horizon League selection, Holbrook helped Loyola to a pair of regular-season conference titles and to the 2004 NCAA Tournament. The Ramblers' all-time leader in assists (5,593) as well as one of the program's career leaders with 1,297 digs, Holbrook earned AVCA Honorable Mention All-America recognition in 2004 and was a two-time AVCA All-Region selection. Seemingly at her best when on the biggest stage, Holbrook twice was named to the Horizon League All-Tournament Team and was tabbed Horizon League Newcomer of the Year in 2001.

The last Loyola player to appear in a NBA game, Andre Moore (1984-87) was one of the most prolific scorers and rebounders ever to wear the Maroon and Gold and becomes the third member of the 1984-85 squad to be inducted into the Loyola Athletics Hall of Fame, joining Alfredrick Hughes and Andre Battle. En route to 1987 Midwestern Collegiate Conference Player of the Year honors, Moore contributed 20.6 points and 12.4 rebounds per game. During his three-year career with the Ramblers, the Chicago native and Carver High School graduate produced 16.5 ppg and 10.9 rpg, while shooting 51.9 percent (597-for-1,150) from the field, and he was an integral part of two MCC regular-season championship teams (1985 and 1987).

The 6-foot-9 center averaged 11.0 ppg and 10.3 rpg in 1984-85 to help Loyola to a 27-6 overall record and an appearance in the NCAA Sweet 16. A three-time All-MCC pick, Moore was selected by the Denver Nuggets in the second round of the 1987 NBA Draft and to this day remains the last Rambler to appear in a NBA regular-season contest. After tallying 2.4 ppg and 1.4 rpg in his brief NBA career, Moore flourished as a professional player in the National Basketball League in Australia, where he still resides today.

The final inductee is the first Rambler women's soccer player to enter the Loyola Athletics Hall of Fame. Cynthia Morote-Ariza was a standout performer on the pitch and is arguably the most accomplished player in program history.  A product of St. Ignatius College Prep in Chicago, Morote-Ariza was the star player during the golden age of Rambler women's soccer, leading the team to NCAA appearances in 2006 and 2007 and Horizon League regular-season titles in 2007 and 2008.

She graduated as Loyola's career leader in points (127), goals (45) and assists (37) and also holds single-season marks with 55 points, 18 goals and 19 assists, all set in 2008, when she was a Capital One Third Team Academic All-America selection. Morote-Ariza led Loyola to a staggering 23-4-3 (.817) record in Horizon League play during her four-year career from 2006-09 and she was a two-time Horizon League Player of the Year honoree (2007, 2008). The 2006 Horizon League Newcomer of the Year, Morote-Ariza was a three-time National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) All-Region performer and in 2010 became the first Rambler to be drafted into the professional ranks, going in the fifth round of the Women's Professional Soccer Draft to the Boston Breakers.

Loyola will also recognize a pair of individuals with special awards during this year's Hall of Fame induction ceremony. Former dance team member and spirit coordinator Kaneidra Everson is the recipient of the Buzzy O'Connell Award for overcoming adversity. Everson courageously battled cancer for five years before tragically passing away at the age of 33 in September.

Brian McIntyre, a Loyola Academy graduate who served as a student manager for the Loyola Chicago men's basketball team in the early 1970s, will be presented with the Fr. Finnegan Award, which is awarded to an individual who has made great contributions to youth through sport. A 1972 Loyola graduate, McIntyre went on to work as the director of public relations for the Chicago Bulls and later as the vice president of public relations for the NBA.

Induction ceremonies will take place at halftime of the Loyola men's basketball game versus Illinois State on February 24 at Gentile Arena.
