Loyola Foiled By Cal State Fullerton, 6-2

March 6, 2007

FULLERTON, Calif. - Ashley Mitchell extended her hitting streak to seven games, but Loyola University Chicago (1-6) dropped a bizarre 6-2 contest at Cal State Fullerton (14-8) at Anderson Field this afternoon.

Fullerton jumped on the board in the bottom of the first without the benefit of a hit before Loyola nearly took a commanding lead in the top of the second after opening the inning with three straight singles. Following a pop-up, Krista Crosson was plunked by a pitch to even the score at 1-1. The Ramblers took the lead on a two-out single by Mitchell and Ellen Kresl followed with what appeared to be a bases-clearing triple to the gap in right center. However, an appeal ruled that a Rambler runner did not touch third base on the way to the plate, thereby negating all three runs.

Fullerton took the lead for good in the fourth inning thanks to home runs by Lauren Lupinetti and Katie Gollhardt, and later tacked on a pair of insurance runs in the sixth for the 6-2 victory.

Six Ramblers recorded hits on the day and Kresl hit safely for the sixth time in seven contests this season.

Loyola continues its spring trip when it travels to face Pac-10 power California Wednesday afternoon.
