Melitas and Metzger tally for Ramblers

Steven Graner earned his first collegiate point with an assist on Loyola's opening goal

Chicago (October 1, 2003) -- Thomas Trivelloni scored in the 102nd minute to give visiting Michigan State (5-2-2) a 3-2, come-from-behind victory this afternoon at Loyola Soccer Park. The Ramblers fall to 5-3-2 with the setback.

Loyola came out flying in the first half as Bill Metzger (Wilmette, Ill.) and Joe Nierzwicki (Chicago, Ill.) each came close in the opening 15 minutes. The Ramblers finally broke through in the 39th minute as Metzger was able to flick on a long throw from Steven Graner (Omaha, Neb.) into the box. Dino Melitas (Chicago, Ill.) was waiting at the far post and his sharp-angle shot found the back of the net, giving LU a 1-0 lead which they took into intermission.

Michigan State came out strong in the second half and nearly missed getting on the board on two different occasions in the first two minutes of the period. However, Loyola doubled its advantage in the 64th minute when Metzger was able to pounce on a loose ball in front of the Spartan goal after good work from Stephen Sprague (Dallas, Texas) and Nierzwicki set up the opportunity. Michigan State finally broke through two minutes later when John Minagawa-Webster scored but it looked as if Loyola would be able to hold on. However, a foul deep in its defensive third proved to be trouble as Minagawa-Webster got a head on the ensuing free kick to tie the match in the 83rd minute.

Michigan State was able to carry the momentum into the overtime period and Trivelloni gave the visitors the win as he made a couple nice moves to create space before blasting a shot far post.

Loyola takes a week off before facing Northwestern on Wed., Oct. 8 in Evanston, Ill. at 4 p.m.
