CHICAGO - Adrian Tigert scored 21 points and added 11 rebounds to help UW-Milwaukee (16-4, 9-1 Horizon) outlast Loyola University Chicago (12-8, 4-6 Horizon), 68-57 tonight at the Gentile Center. The battle of the top two offensive teams in the League wound up being a defensive struggle as the Ramblers were held 16 points below their season average.
"This was a tough loss," Loyola head coach Jim Whitesell said. "I thought we made a nice run there in the second half, but we need to make some of those baskets. You can see why Milwaukee is leading our league. They know how to win. We didn't shoot the ball well and I was really disappointed with the way we played in the last two minutes."
Milwaukee built on a 35-28 halftime lead to open up a 43-31 advantage with 13:34 left to play before the Ramblers went on a run. Loyola scored 10 of the game's next 12 points to slice the deficit to 45-41 on Tracy Robinson's three-pointer.
Loyola was never able to get closer than four points the rest of the way and Milwaukee broke the game open with a 5-0 run to turn a 56-51 lead into a 61-51 advantage with 2:19 left in regulation.
Blake Schilb scored 20 points to pace the Loyola attack, while Leon Young recorded 11 points for his first double-digit effort since Jan. 2. Chris Logan chipped in 10 points for the Ramblers, who committed only eight turnovers on the night, but were outrebounded, 37-23.
Loyola concludes its six-game homestand when it entertains Cleveland State, Feb. 4 at 4 p.m.
