YOUNGSTOWN - Blake Schilb scored a season-high 29 points, including seven in overtime, as Loyola University Chicago (17-10, 8-8 Horizon) earned a hard-fought 87-84 victory over Youngstown State (7-20, 4-12 Horizon) in overtime tonight at the Beeghly Center. The Ramblers finished the year as one of five teams tied for third place in the Horizon League regular-season standings.
Schilb's fourth three-pointer of the game gave Loyola an early 26-6 lead that grew to as many as 24 points, at 32-8, with 10:35 remaining in the first period. Loyola's final four points of that stretch came after a technical foul on YSU head coach Jerry Slocum. That technical seemed to light a fire under the Penguins as they answered with 16 straight points to slice the lead to 32-24. Loyola held a slim 38-36 lead at the half despite 19 points from Youngstown's Domonique Crawford.
Loyola saw an eight-point second half lead evaporate and Keston Roberts' basket with 3:14 remaining in regulation gave the Penguins a 68-66 lead. The Ramblers trailed 71-68 with eight seconds left when Chris Logan's three-point attempt was short, but Tracy Robinson snagged the rebound and kicked out to Schilb in the right corner for the game-tying trey that sent the contest to overtime tied at 71.
Quin Humphrey scored the first five points of the overtime session to give Youngstown a 76-71 lead just two minutes into the period. Trailing 78-74, Loyola went on a 9-0 run thanks to four free throws from J.R. Blount and a triple and pair of foul shots from Schilb, to take an 83-80 lead it never surrendered.
In addition to his season-high 29 points, Schilb also contributed eight rebounds, three assists, two blocks and a pair of steals. Leon Young tallied a season-high 23 points, hitting 13 of 15 tries from the charity stripe, while adding eight boards. Blount chipped in 10 points and four assists.
Youngstown was led by Crawford's career-high 37 points.
