CANFIELD, Ohio - Freshman right-hander Amy Solava allowed only three hits and struck out seven, but was the hard-luck loser in Loyola University Chicago's (20-19, 14-5 Horizon) 1-0 loss to Youngstown State (16-20, 7-7 Horizon) in eight innings this afternoon at McCune Park. The Penguins became the first team to win a League series from the Horizon League regular-season champion Ramblers this season.
In a pitcher's duel, the two teams combined for only five hits on the day. Youngstown State threatened in the bottom of the second inning, putting runners on second and third with one out, but Solava slammed the door by striking out Allyse Ledford and getting Kelli Sheibly to ground out.
The game remained scoreless until the eighth inning when McKenzie Bedra ripped a two-out single to left center that scored Lacy Bronson to give the Penguins the 1-0 victory.
Lindsay O'Gean and Katie Duffy recorded Loyola's only two hits on the day.
The Ramblers will be the No. 1 seed and will face No. 8 Detroit in the opening round of the Horizon League Championship on May 10 in Cleveland, Ohio.
