KETTERING, Ohio -
A trio of Ramblers carded scores in the 70s as the Loyola University Chicago men's golf team opened play today at the Dayton Flyer Invitational in Kettering, Ohio.
Loyola will enter Tuesday's final round slated at 13th on the team leaderboard, just six shots out of the top ten, after posting an opening-round total of 319 on Monday at the par-71, 7,055-yard South Course at the NCR Country Club. Oakland (303) currently leads the team race and holds a four-shot lead over second-place IUPUI (307), while the Jaguars' Austin Winings is in the driver's seat in the hunt for medalist honors after firing a blistering one-under-par 70.
Following an hour delay due to frost on the course, leading the attack for the Maroon & Gold in Western Ohio was freshman Zach Hoskins. Hoskins, out of Orlando, Fla., carded a team-low five-over-par 76 today that has the freshman on the verge of the top ten of the individual leaderboard, tied for 13th overall. Two strokes back is fellow freshman Orion Yamat, who fired a 78 that has the Niles, Ill. product as part of an 11-way tie for 31st.
Also battling his way to a score in the 70s today was junior Michael Valletti. Valletti, coming off an impressive showing at the Whistling Straits Intercollegiate that included a career-low round of 71, is tied for 43rd place after turning in an opening-round 79. Rounding out the Rambler quintet today was senior PJ Riner and sophomore Garret Buckley. Riner sits in a tie for 92nd at 86, while Buckley posted an 89 that has the Novi, Mich. native tied for 96th.
