MVC Release
ST. LOUIS, Mo. -
After receiving honors from College Soccer News earlier today, Loyola University Chicago redshirt sophomore Grant Stoneman (Saint Charles, Ill./Wheaton Academy/Wisconsin) has been named the Missouri Valley Conference's Defensive Player of the Week, the league office announced this afternoon. This marks the second consecutive week that he has earned the weekly accolade.
Stoneman turned in a pair of strong efforts for the Maroon & Gold over the weekend as Loyola captured the title at the NIU Adidas Invitational in DeKalb, Ill. The Saint Charles, Ill. product was selected as the event's Most Valuable Player after notching game-winning tallies against both then No. 12/8 Utah Valley and Binghamton.
Along with his efforts on the offensive end, Stoneman also served as a key cog along Loyola's backline as the Ramblers recorded a pair of shutouts and allowed only three shots on goal all weekend. The Ramblers, who have held opposing offenses scoreless for 374 consecutive minutes, currently boast a Valley-best 0.39 goals against average that ranks 11th overall nationally.
Loyola looks to continue its perfect start to the season as it opens league play in Des Moines, Iowa on Saturday against Drake. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m.
