Washpun, Papper Lead Loyola At Jack Jennett Open

Todhunter breaks own school record in 60m hurdles

Jack Jennett Open Results

CEDAR FALLS, Iowa (January 26, 2018) –
Senior Kiera Washpun and sophomore Michael Papper both turned in impressive marks to highlight the day for the Loyola University Chicago track & field teams at the Jack Jennett Open in Cedar Falls, Iowa today.

"We had a really good start to the weekend at the Jack Jennett Open," Loyola head track & field coach Bob Thurnhoffer said.  "Kiera (Washpun) got off to a hot start with a 19' leap in the long jump that puts her well ahead of where she was last year at this time.  Michael (Papper) had a big day with a 22'5'' long jump and a 7.10 in the 60m dash.  Gift (Chinda) had a big triple jump debut, putting him right in the thick of the MVC leaderboard.  We had some great performances from Tyler (Elmore), Natajah (Simmons), Denee' (Lawrence) and Lauren (Kroll) in the 60m dash.  It was also great to see Regan (Todhunter) continue to shave down his school-record time in the 60m hurdles.  We're excited to get back at it tomorrow for the Mark Messersmith Invitational."

Washpun, a native of Iowa City, Iowa, got the day off to a flying start for the Maroon & Gold in the women's long jump.  She posted a season-best leap of 19-00.50 (5.80m) to cruise to a first-place finish.  Sophomore Mackenzie Arnold joined Washpun in the top five, coming in fourth at 17-04.25 (5.29m).  Senior Paulina Gal also excelled in the field for the Ramblers, taking second in the shot put with a top toss of 43-01.75 (13.15m).

Papper impressed on both the track and in the field inside the UNI Dome this afternoon.  The Northbrook, Ill. product opened his afternoon with a personal-best leap of 22-50.00 (6.83m) in the long jump, the seventh longest indoor mark in school history, en route to claiming second place.  Papper moved on to the 60m dash where he clocked another personal-best, crossing in 7.10 in a preliminary heat.  Freshman Gift Chinda enjoyed a strong debut in the men's triple jump, recording a jump of 46-00.75 (14.04m) to pick up a comfortable victory and move to third all-time at Loyola in the event.

Junior Regan Todhunter continued to best his own school record in the men's 60m hurdles.  The Rock Falls, Ill. native took third overall with a sparkling time of 8.41.  In the men's 60m hurdles, freshman Tyler Elmore fell just two one-hundredths of a second short of matching his top time of the season, as he crossed in 6.96 to earn a third-place finish of his own.  On the women's side of the 60m dash, junior Natajah Simmons finished second (7.82), while sophomore Denee' Lawrence (7.88) and freshman Lauren Kroll (8.00) came in fourth and sixth, respectively.

Loyola is back in action in Cedar Falls tomorrow when it competes at the Mark Messersmith Invitational.
