Loyola Closes Out Weekend At Mark Messersmith Invitational

Washpun, Simmons pick up victories for the Ramblers

Mark Messersmith Invitational Results

CEDAR FALLS, Iowa (January 27, 2018) –
Senior Kiera Washpun and junior Natajah Simmons both laid claim to event titles as the Loyola University Chicago track & field teams wrapped up a two-day stay in Cedar Falls, Iowa by competing at the Mark Messersmith Invitational today.

"We came to Northern Iowa to get on the conference track and to get a bunch of quality reps on over two days," Loyola head track & field coach Bob Thurnhoffer said.  "We saw it as a great training opportunity and it was just that.  We got plenty of work in and identified some things to improve upon.  We'll rest up over the next week and go for some big marks next weekend at Notre Dame."

Washpun picked up right where she left off yesterday this afternoon inside the UNI Dome.  The Iowa City, Iowa native notched her second victory in the women's long jump in as many days as she registered a top leap of 18-11.75 (5.78m).

Simmons, out of Oswego, Ill., took home the women's 200m dash crown as she crossed in 25.53.  Sophomore Denee' Lawrence always put points on the board for the Ramblers in the event, taking fifth at 25.89.

The pairing of senior Stephen Hubona and sophomore Eric Burns shined for the Maroon & Gold in the men's field evens.  Burns posted a mark of 23-03.25 (7.09m) to place second in the men's long jump, while Hubona used a toss of 56-09.25 (17.30m) to earn a fifth-place finish in the men's weight throw.

Freshman Tyler Elmore continued the strong start to his debut season with the Ramblers.  Elmore matched his top time of the indoor campaign in the men's 60m dash, clocking in at 6.94 en route to finishing fifth overall.

Loyola visits South Bend, Ind. next weekend, February 2-3, for the Meyo Invitational.  A group of Ramblers will also be in action closer to home at the Windy City Invite on February 3 in Chicago.
