White Dominates Mile On Final Day Of SPIRE D1 Invitational

Junior posts fourth fastest time in school history

SPIRE D1 Invitational Final Results | GVSU Big Meet Final Results

GENEVA, Ohio (February 10, 2018) –
Junior Kevin White turned in a sparkling performance en route to victory in the mile run to highlight a strong final day for the Loyola University Chicago track & field teams at the SPIRE D1 Invitational in Geneva, Ohio.

White, who was running unattached, cruised to a victory this afternoon in his home state.  The Wooster, Ohio product posted a time of 4:03.09, the fourth fastest time in the event in school history, to defeat his next closest finisher, Nick Wolf of Pittsburgh, by nearly three seconds.

"To do what Kevin did in the mile today in his first indoor meet of the year and first race in three months is beyond special," Loyola assistant coach Mircea Bogdan said.  "The future for him is bright and, as a coach, I am thrilled to continue to help him achieve what we all know he is capable of."

Loyola received a breakout showing from its 4x400m relay team of juniors Leron Norton and Elijah Olige and sophomores Michael Edwards and Octavian Wells.  The quartet clocked a season-best time of 3:12.84 to earn a third-place finish behind Rutgers and Penn State of the Big Ten Conference.  That time ranks seventh all-time at Loyola and sits third on the Missouri Valley Conference leaderboard in the event.

"On the men's side, it was great to see a number of really solid marks in the 200m dash and then come back to run a really hot 4x400m relay," Loyola assistant coach Jon DeGrave commented.  "I especially thought Michael and Elijah excelled in the middle legs for us right in the thick of a really good field.  Regan (Todhunter), Tyler (Elmore) and Octavian also had a really solid weekend and I think they are ready for breakouts at the conference meet in two weeks."

Competing at the GVSU Big Meet in Allendale, Mich., sophomore Denee' Lawrence posted a personal-best showing in the 200m dash.  Lawrence checked in at 25.38 to earn a fourth-place finish in the event.

The Rambler women continued their strong weekend in the distance events as well this afternoon.  Senior Emma Hatch rolled to a first-place finish in the mile run at 4:59.90.  In the women's distance medley relay, senior Cassie Bloch, redshirt junior Lindsey Brewis, junior Natajah Simmons and sophomore Rita Maurais closed the weekend with a bang for the Maroon & Gold as they recorded a time of 11:58.89 to move to eighth all-time at Loyola in the event.

"I was really happy to see Denee' with a nice indoor personal best in the 200m dash, especially after her rough day yesterday," DeGrave continued.  "It was also great to see Natajah with another solid weekend of multiple runs right near her personal bests.  I think she's put herself in a really good position going into the conference meet."

Loyola wraps up the regular season portion of its indoor schedule next Saturday (February 17) at the Alex Wilson Invitational in South Bend, Ind.
