ALLENDALE, Mich. (February 9, 2018) – Four members of the Ramblers' women's distance crew posted new marks to the program's indoor record board as the Loyola University Chicago track & field teams enjoyed a strong start to the weekend at the GVSU Big Meet in Allendale, Mich. today.
Leading the charge for the Maroon & Gold on the western edge of Michigan this afternoon was the duo of senior
Emma Hatch and redshirt junior
Lindsey Brewis. Brewis took home the 5,000m run with a sensational time of 16:26.01 that moves her into second all-time at Loyola in the event. Hatch narrowly missed out on a personal-best of her own, checking in at 16:55.28 to finish seventh overall. Junior
Erin Falsey also enjoyed a strong showing alongside Hatch and Brewis, posting a time of 17:30.19 (25
th place) to move to 10
th on the program's all-time indoor record board.
Senior
Cassie Bloch put her name on Loyola's 800m run record board, clocking in at 2:13.92 to move into the number 10 spot as part of a 13
th-place showing. Junior
Emily Karl shaved just under a half-second off of her previous personal best in the 600m run as she came in at 1:37.67 to take seventh.
"We had a tremendous start to the weekend at GVSU, highlighted by 10 personal bests, 12 season bests and four new top 10 marks," Loyola assistant coach
Alan Peterson commented. "We talked about how opportunities like this don't come along all of the time and to take advantage of them, which everyone embraced. We're all looking forward to finishing strong tomorrow."
Competing at the Tyson Invitational in Fayetteville, Ark. was Loyola's long jump pairing of senior
Kiera Washpun and sophomore
Eric Burns. Washpun posted a season-best leap of 19-01.25 (5.82m) to finish eighth overall, while Burns took 22
nd at 18-03.00 (5.56m).
"We came out the Tyson Invitational for the first time in program history," Loyola head track & field coach
Bob Thurnhoffer said. "It was a good experience. We missed on an opportunity with Eric but he's close to catching some big jumps. Kiera competed extremely well and got out to the second best indoor mark of her career, while really holding her own against some of the best jumpers in the country."
Sophomore
Octavian Wells led the charge for the Rambler men at the SPIRE D1 Invitational in Geneva, Ohio. Wells won his heat of the 200m dash in 21.94 en route to finishing seventh overall. Sophomore
Michael Edwards came across in 22.08 to move into seventh on Loyola's all-time indoor record board in the event, while freshman
Tyler Elmore crossed in 22.13, the eighth fastest time in school history.
Loyola will be back in action tomorrow when it wraps up competition at both the GVSU Big Meet and the SPIRE D1 Invitational.
