Late Surge Sends White To Eugene On Final Day Of NCAA West Regional

Brewis closes season with personal best in 5,000m run

NCAA West Regional Final Results

SACRAMENTO, Calif. (May 26, 2018) –
Junior Kevin White punched his ticket to the NCAA Outdoor Track & Field Championships this evening with a sensational performance in the 1,500m run at the NCAA West Regional in Sacramento, Calif.

"Today was a historic day for the Ramblers as Kevin qualified for the NCAA Championships at historic Hayward Field," Loyola head track & field coach Bob Thurnhoffer commented.  "It's truly a world class meet so to get someone there is tremendous for our program and the University as a whole.  Overall, the weekend couldn't have gone better.  Kevin, Emma (Hatch), and Lindsey (Brewis) all ran big personal bests and gave it their all.  I'm really proud of what they did and how much progress they made this year."

White, who saw action in heat two of the regional final in the event, used a final surge that saw him close the final 400m in 54.11 en route to claiming third in 3:43.26, the fourth fastest time in school history, to automatically earn a berth to the national meet.  The Wooster, Ohio native is Loyola's first male outdoor national qualifier since Sam Penzenstadler, who ultimately earned a third-place finish in the 1,500m run national final during the 2013-14 season.

"Kevin stuck with the plan, believed in his abilities and pulled off a major performance," Loyola assistant coach Mircea Bogdan commented.  "He was absolutely stunning today.  This result means not only a lot to him, but to all of us at Loyola.  It shows that with work, patience, and determination, one can go far.  We are so proud of Kevin and how high he sets the bar.  Now the next step is Eugene and we are all beyond excited!"

Redshirt junior Lindsey Brewis saw her season come to a close in the 5,000m run regional final.  Like White, the Dearborn, Mich. product turned in an impressive closing effort as she ascended to 12th in her heat with a personal-best time of 16:10.70 that saw her finish 26th overall.  This evening's showing caps off a terrific outdoor campaign for Brewis that saw her earn All-Missouri Valley Conference accolades in the 5,000m run following a runner-up showing at the outdoor league meet.

"Lindsey competed her heart out today and came away with another personal best," Loyola assistant coach Alan Peterson said.  "It wasn't the ending that we wanted, but she gained some valuable experience that will help prepare her for the future.  I couldn't be more proud of the season she had and we're excited for what is to come."

All eyes will now shift to White as he moves on to the NCAA Championships, June 6-9, at historic Hayward Field in Eugene, Ore.  White is slated to see action in the 1,500m run national semifinals at approximately 6:46 p.m. (CT) on Wednesday, June 6.
