BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (August 24, 2018)
In Short
Elle Van Grinsven recorded a team-high eight kills, but it wasn't enough as Loyola University Chicago dropped match one of the 2018 season and the Courtyard by Marriott Samford Invitational, falling to Kennesaw State, 18-25, 26-28, 22-25 this morning at the Pete Hanna Center.
How It Happened
Loyola and Kennesaw State played evenly in the early going of set one and an Owls attack error drew the Ramblers even at 15. From that point, however, Kennesaw State claimed control of the set, and closed things out with an 8-2 run for a 25-18 victory.
A 3-0 run, capped by a
Delilah Wolf service ace midway through the second set, wiped out a one-point deficit and gave Loyola a short-lived 18-16 lead. Kennesaw State stormed back, recording four unanswered tallies of its own to surge ahead by two before the Ramblers countered with another 3-0 spurt, highlighted by back-to-back aces from freshman
Lauren Caprini, to go on top, 21-20. The teams battled back and forth for the remainder of the set and Loyola staved off set point on three occasions until consecutive errors closed out KSU's 28-26 victory.
After Kennesaw State opened up a 16-13 lead in set three, a pair of blocks book-ended a mini 3-0 Loyola spurt that tied things up at 16, providing the Ramblers hopes of extending the match to a fourth set. However, the Owls reclaimed the lead, stringing together four straight tallies, for a 20-16 advantage before Loyola was able to mount a late rally. A Van Grinsven kill and
Morgan Gresham service ace trimmed what was a 24-20 deficit in half, but that was as close as the Ramblers would get in a 25-22 setback.
A Look At The Numbers
- In addition to her team-high eight stops, Van Grinsven added four digs, a pair of blocks and an ace, while Heather Kocken contributed seven kills and three blocks.
- Wolf had a solid all-around effort, putting up 23 assists, six digs and five blocks, and Caprini served up three aces in her collegiate debut.
- Kennesaw State, which hit .343 for the match, was led by a trio of players with 10 kills – Sydni Shelton, Lauren Chastang and Liesl Engelbrecht.
