CHICAGO (August 31, 2018)
In Short
Quinn Spieker pounded out a match-high 12 kills as a confident Loyola University Chicago squad rolled to its third straight win with a 25-23, 25-17-25-18 victory over Georgia State (2-3) in women's volleyball action tonight at Gentile Arena in the Hampton Inn Rambler Challenge. The three-match winning streak in the Ramblers' longest since a three-game run, September 24 – October 1, 2016.
How It Happened
Set one was a see-saw battle, with neither team leading by more than three points.
Heather Kocken's kill snapped a 22-all tie and a Georgia State setting error extended the Loyola lead to 24-22. After a Panthers kill sliced the Ramblers' lead in half, Spieker finished off the set with her fourth kill of the evening for a 25-23 victory.
Similar to several sets this year, Loyola staged a rally in set two, overcoming a five-point deficit to eventually run away for a 25-17 decision, despite hitting just -.065. Trailing 9-4 early, the Ramblers put together a 7-2 run that brought the teams even at 11. A handful of points later, back-to-back blocks ignited a run of six unanswered points as the Ramblers broke open a 21-15 lead and never looked back, grabbing a two-set lead in the match.
A 6-1 run that featured a pair of kills from Spieker, proved decisive in set three, allowing Loyola break a tie and build a 14-9 advantage. Georgia State would eventually whittle the deficit down to 16-14, but kills from Spieker and
Elle Van Grinsven, sandwiched around a Panthers hitting error, bumped the lead back to five and the Ramblers would go on to claim a 25-18 victory and notch their second win of the day.
A Look At The Numbers
- In addition to her 12 kills, Spieker added eight digs and hit .333 (12-3-27), while Van Grinsven provided nine kills and four blocks.
