Behrns Named 2022 Katha Quinn Award Recipient

Associate Athletic Director for Communications Bill Behrns will receive the Katha Quinn Award from the USWBA.

INDIANAPOLIS (Feb. 14, 2022) – The U.S. Basketball Writers Association (USBWA) announced that Loyola Associate Athletic Director for Communications Bill Behrns was named the recipient of the Katha Quinn Award. This award is given annually to a college basketball media contact who goes above and beyond for members of the media.

"It's so great and fitting to see Bill recognized by the U.S. Basketball Writers Association," said Loyola Director of Athletics Steve Watson. "The quantity and quality of Bill's work is impressive, but perhaps his greatest gift is the way he manages so many different, important relationships.  We are extremely fortunate to have Bill as a member of Loyola's team."

Berhns has been in his current role at Loyola since 2016, but his time with the Ramblers goes beyond these last six years. His first stint with Loyola ranged from 1999 through 2013, giving him a grand total of 21 years at the university.

Since returning to Chicago, Behrns has been instrumental in the promotion of the men's basketball team since their trip to the NCAA Final Four in 2018. He has worked with the media day in and day out to let the world know the stories of Porter Moser, Drew Valentine, Clayton Custer, Cameron Krutwig, Lucas Williamson and the famous Sister Jean, just to name a few.

While also ensuring the stories of his athletes and coaches were told with the utmost accuracy, he responds efficiently to media requests and disperses information in a timely matter, helping the media do their jobs in the best way possible. He also contributed greatly to the recently released film "The Loyola Project," as he found photos and information for the film in the paper archives available from the 1963 national championship team.

"Bill embodies the working relationship sports information directors should have with the media," said Shannon Ryan, the current USBWA president who previously covered Loyola for the Chicago Tribune, in a press release from the USBWA. "He represents his university and athletic department with dignity, while also understanding reporters' role and helping us get all the information we need to tell the story. He's a tireless worker and often a one-man show without the resources of some power conference teams' sports info departments, but you'd never know it. Basketball fans know so much more about Loyola – from Sister Jean to Porter Moser to Clayton Custer to Drew Valentine – because Bill understands how to assist reporters in sharing these stories."

Berhns will be presented with the award by the USBWA at the NCAA Final Four in New Orleans in April.
