DADE CITY, Fla (February 6, 2023) – The Loyola University Chicago men's golf team kicked off its spring slate Monday at the Earl Yestingsmeier Match Play in Dade City, Fla., defeating Western Kentucky in the quarterfinals before falling to Drake in the semifinals.
The Ramblers opened play with a 4.0-2.0 victory over WKU. The Maroon & Gold were led by the duo of
Zach Walsh and
Ryan Walsh, who defeated their opponents by margins of 5&4 and 4&3 respectively. Graduate student
Tyler Anderson (3&1) took victory by winning three out of his last four holes while senior
Timmy Crawford battled to win by a 2&1 margin. Freshmen
Sebastian Kasun and
Charlie Kulwin fell, both by margins of 2&1.
The semifinals saw the Ramblers paired with an old Missouri Valley Conference rival in Drake, with the Bulldogs handing Loyola a 4.0-2.0 defeat. Crawford took victory again, this time in a close battle ending with the Arlington Heights, Ill. native finishing one-up over his opponent. Kasun (3&2) rebounded from his first round to give the Ramblers their other point.
Ryan Walsh (5&4), Kulwin (3&2), Anderson (one-down), and
Zach Walsh (2&1) fell as the Ramblers were knocked out in the semifinals.
Loyola will take on the No. 4 seed High Point in a consolation round on Tuesday, with a shotgun start beginning at 7:30 a.m. (CT).
