Ramblers Fall in 3-0 Sweep to Bruins

PHOENIX –  No. 6 Loyola Chicago battled through the night but fell in straight sets to top-ranked UCLA, 3-0, on night two of the First Point Collegiate Challenge, Sunday, Jan. 18 at the Phoenix Convention Center. The nationally televised match on ESPNU featured long rallies and tight finishes; Aleksandar Sosa finished with a team-high 11 kills and a career-high six service aces.

The Ramblers are now 2-2 heading into their home-opening weekend at Gentile Arena.

Coach Quote: Shane Davis
"UCLA is the No. 1 team in the country for a reason, and we saw that in how they handled the big moments tonight. I'm proud of how our guys competed this weekend. We didn't back down and we were right there in every set. The difference was a few plays late, and against a team like that, you have to be perfect in those moments. We'll learn from this, get better and keep building."

How It Happened
Set 1 |
The opener was tightly contested from start to finish, featuring 10 ties and four lead changes. Loyola hit .321 in the set and totaled 12 kills in the loss, with Daniel Fabikovic, Aidan Klein and Jake Reach each contributing three. Late service aces by Sosa gave the Ramblers a brief edge, but UCLA took the set 25-23.

Set 2 | UCLA jumped out to an early lead behind aggressive serving and efficient middle offense. The Ramblers never took the lead but trimmed the deficit to three midway through the set. Two more service aces from Sosa sparked a brief run, but the Bruins maintained control down the stretch and finished the set on a late surge to take it 25-19.

Set 3 | The final set was the most dramatic of the night. Loyola and UCLA traded points nearly the entire frame, with neither team leading by more than two. Sosa and Fabikovic continued to score but UCLA scored three straight points to secure the match 26-24.
