Chicago (November 14, 2002) -Â Larry Farmer, Loyola University Chicago's men's basketball coach, looked near and far when recruiting for next season. Today, Farmer announced the signing of Andre Knox of Whitney Young High School in Chicago and Majak Kou (pronounced May-Jack Coe) from Hamilton, Ontario. Both Knox and Kou signed national letters of intent to attend Loyola next fall.
"This was a great effort by my staff to get two perimeter players who be we feel will be sensational players at Loyola," Farmer said. "Majak is a 6-foot-5, two-three player who is a great shooter. Andre brings an element of ball-handling and shooting which should add to the three-guard system we like to play."
Knox is a 6-foot-2 sharp-shooting combo guard. As a junior, he tallied 17 points, eight rebounds, four assists and three steals per game for a very talented Whitney Young squad. Knox has been rated as the 30th-best player in the state according to High School Elite. An all-conference selection last season, he scored 25 points, knocking down five three-point field goals in a victory over Thornwood.
Kou is a slender 6-foot-5 wing player who was rated as one of the top players in Canada. An extremely talented and athletic player who is capable of creating his own shot, Kou posted 22.6 points and 11.3 rebounds per game as a junior at Cathedral High School in Ontario. Last season, Kou converted .601 of his shots from the field while also shooting .456 from three-point range and .782 from the charity stripe. A member of the Under-18 Canadian National Team, Kou participated in a 19-day tour of South America and Venezuela this past summer.
Loyola kicks off its 2002-03 season on Nov. 25 when it hosts Bradley. The Ramblers are coming off of a 17-13 season in which they came one basket away from making their first NCAA tournament appearance since 1985.
