CHICAGO - Junior opposite hitter Ian Anderson and freshman George Kamberos both registered double-figures in kills for the second consecutive match to lead 13th-ranked Loyola Chicago to a 30-20, 30-19, 30-20 victory over the Milwaukee School of Engineering on Tuesday night at Alumni Gym.
Anderson had a match-high 13 kills on 28 attempts for a .321 hitting percentage along with four blocks and two digs. In only his second match as a Rambler, Kamberos turned in his second double-figure kill performance with 10 kills on 14 attempts for a .500 hitting percentage as well as five digs, four ace serves and two blocks.
After the first game was tied at two, Loyola took control and gradually built a lead. The Ramblers established control of the match early in game one by limiting the Raiders to a negative.074 hitting percentage, compared to their own .217 mark. Loyola got four of their team blocks in the opening game; led by a pair of block assists by Anderson and Nick Lamoureux. Kamberos converted all four of his attack attempts into kills for a 1.000 mark while James Grunt served three aces.
After falling behind 2-0 early in game two, three service point by Brian Guntli gave Loyola a 4-2 it would never relinquish. The Ramblers managed its highest hitting percentage of the match with a .333 hitting percentage as Anderson tallied seven kills followed by six from Krisjanis Berzins and five from Kamberos.
The Ramblers managed their highest hitting percentage of the match in the third game, a .481 mark. With a 19-16 advantage, Loyola needed every conversion to spark a 6-1, which allowed them to cruise to a 30-20 match-clinching win.
In addition to seven kills on 11 attack attempts for a .636 hitting percentage, Grunst posted a career-high six service aces. Loyola had 13 ace serves compared to MSOE's four. Guntli coordinated the Rambler attack with a match-high 38 assists.
Defensively, Guntli, Zach Bailey and Derek Jensen each tied for the team lead with six digs apiece. On the block, Anderson and Lamoureux both registered four blocks apiece.
MSOE's Michael Mocchi led the Raider attack with 12 kills, six digs and two ace serves.
Loyola opens MIVA Shondell/Dunlap Division play against defending MIVA champion and preseason favorite IPFW at 7 p.m. on Saturday at Alumni Gym.
