Gritty Defensive Effort Leads Loyola Past IPFW, 69-53

CHICAGO - Loyola University Chicago (13-7) held IPFW (7-12) to 26 percent shooting from the field in the second half to get past the Mastodons, 69-53 at the Gentile Center this afternoon. The win is the Ramblers' seventh in a row at home and they improved to 9-1 this season when holding opponents to less than 70 points.

Majak Kou's lay-up with 3:15 left in the first half gave Loyola a 28-21 lead, its largest of the period before the Dons answered with an 8-1 run to even the contest at 29. Another Kou lay-up and a basket by Andy Polka put the Ramblers back on top, 33-29 before Jakari Johnson closed the half scoring with a three-pointer to cut the Loyola lead to 33-32 at the half.

Blake Schilb scored eight of his 13 points in the first 2:19 of the second period to help Loyola pad its lead to 43-32. IPFW sliced the deficit to 46-40 with 12:13 left, but the Ramblers countered with a 14-1 run to put the game away.

Kou registered his first career double-double with 17 points and a career-best 11 rebounds, while J.R. Blount chipped in 15 points and a career-high seven boards. Leon Young added 16 points and six caroms.

With 13 points Schilb moved past Carl Golston into fifth place on the school's all-time scoring list. The senior guard now has 1,637 career tallies.

Loyola returns to action when it hosts No. 18 Butler on Jan. 25 at 7 p.m.
