Despite Hot Start, Loyola Stumbles Against Wright State, 66-60

CHICAGO - Loyola raced out to an 18-4 lead but Wright State roared back to take a four-point lead at halftime and managed to hold off the Ramblers in the second half to claim a 66-60 win this afternoon at the Gentile Center. Loyola stumbles to 6-17 (4-8 Horizon) while the Raiders improve to 6-16 (4-7).

Loyola stormed out of the gates, determined to put a tough four-point loss on Thursday night to Butler behind them, and five quick points from Marquise Hanser staked the hosts to an early 7-0 lead. After Wright State answered with a pair of buckets, the Ramblers reeled off 11 in a row over a four-minute span to take the 18-4 lead at the under-12 minute media timeout. However, Loyola's offense went stagnant from there and Wright State began to find a rhythm, using a 14-2 spurt to take its first lead and the run was part of a larger, 29-11 run to close the period.

The halftime break did little to stem the tide and a Brittney Whiteside hoop four minutes into the period gave the Raiders a 43-31 lead. It was then that Loyola began to fight back, as a pair of Jenna Real free throws and a Maggie McCloskey three-pointer quickly cut the deficit to seven. Another McCloskey triple and a conventional three-point play from Hanser drew LU within three (45-42) at the 13:33 mark but Wright State managed to play from in front until an Elyse VanBogaert three-point play finally pulled the Ramblers even at 56 with 6:51 on the clock. Loyola missed three opportunities to take the lead, including a missed front-end of a one-and-one, and a Whiteside hoop pushed the Raiders back in front with just under three minutes left. After another LU missed, Wright State stretched the lead to four points with a pair of free throws off an offensive rebound and the Ramblers would get no closer than two points the rest of the way.

Real and Hanser paced Loyola with 13 points apiece and they were joined in double figures by McCloskey, who finished with 10 points. Tyanda Hammock scored 15 of her game-high 17 points in the first half to lead Wright State.

Loyola has a week to prepare for its next game, which will be next Saturday against Illinois-Chicago at the UIC Pavilion. Tip-off is scheduled for 3 p.m.
