NORMAL, Ill. -
Loyola University Chicago (4-11) used the long ball to earn a split at No. 17 Illinois State (20-6) this afternoon and record its first victory over a ranked opponent since 2000, as it captured game one of a doubleheader, 3-0, before dropping the nightcap, 9-7, in a game called due to rain after five innings. The Ramblers' last win over a ranked foe was an April 1, 2000 victory over Illinois-Chicago.
In the opener, senior Raven Gengler led off the top of the second inning with a home run to put Loyola on the board and junior Kat Krause slugged a two-run blast in the sixth to provide insurance runs to help the Ramblers snap a three-game losing skid.
Illinois State threatened in the seventh when Jessie Buker led off with a double, but sophomore right-hander Krista Crosson worked out of trouble by striking out Stacy Birk, then getting Casey Gorrell to line into a double play to end the game.
Krause was 2 for 3 with a pair of RBI and Gengler scored a pair of runs to lead the Rambler offense. Crosson was superb in the circle, scattering three hits and striking out three for her first shutout of the year.
The nightcap was a slugfest before being called due to rain. Illinois State took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first before the Ramblers countered with a four-run second inning to open up a 4-1 lead, with the big hit being a two-run single from shortstop Alexandra Trudnich.
Krause tripled home Nora Schober, who had led off with a walk, in the third, to put the Ramblers ahead 5-1, but the Redbirds hung three runs on the board in the bottom of the inning and another in the fourth to even the score.
Krause walloped her second home run of the day, another two-run shot, in the fifth to give Loyola a 7-5 lead, but ISU plated four runs in the bottom of the inning before the contest was called when the skies opened.
Ellen Kresl and Krause tallied a pair of hits apiece to lead the Ramblers in game two.
Loyola is off until March 27 when it heads to Madison, Wis., to face Wisconsin in a single game.
