Mundelein, Ill. - Paced by stellar performances from freshman Lucy McGovern and sophomore Kaitlin Kearney, the Loyola golf team finished fourth at the Loyola Invitational, held at Pine Meadow Golf Club in Mundelein, Ill. Loyola actually improved its score on day two of the tournament, posting a 332 today en route to a 36-hole total of 665. Northern Illinois took the team title with 319-stroke performances in each of the two rounds for a 638 total. Butler's Niki Garden took home medalist honors after posting back-to-back rounds of 73 for a total of 146.
McGovern and Kearney were the leaders for the Ramblers, posting totals of 161 and 162, respectively. McGovern followed her opening-round 77 with an 84 while Kearney was nearly the opposite, bouncing back from an opening 84 to shoot a team-best 78 today. Senior Rachael Sinnen finished in a tie for 15th place with a total of 180 (85-85), two strokes ahead of junior Michelle Puch (87-85, 172). Freshman Jaclyn Zembrodt (89-87, 176) and Sarah VanVooren (97-87, 184) rounded out the Loyola contingent.
Garden's rounds of 73 were the lowest two rounds of the tournament, and she claimed medalist honors by 10 shots over Northern Illinois' Abbie Many. The Huskies, however, claimed the team title on the strength of Many and the duo of Lisa Bailey and Kim Hunley, who were both tied for third place.
Loyola is off until it wraps up its season at the Horizon League Championship, which begins April 30 in Lebanon, Ohio.
