CHICAGO - Notre Dame (25-21) used a dazzling pitching effort from sophomore Brittney Bargar to record a 5-0 victory over Loyola University Chicago (18-17) this afternoon at Loyola Softball Park. Bargar struck out 10 and allowed only one base runner, en route to a no-hitter. The loss was only the Ramblers' fifth in the last 19 outings.
The Fighting Irish scored all of the runs they would need in the first inning, taking a 2-0 lead on shortstop Katie Laing's two-run homer to left field. Loyola tried to mount a two-out rally in the bottom of the first when Kat Krause was hit by a pitch and promptly stole second, but Bargar put a stop to the threat by striking out Kristen Medrud.
From that point forward, Bargar was dominant as she retired the next 18 hitters in order. Notre Dame tacked on an insurance run in the sixth inning on Linda Kohan's RBI double, then added two more runs in the seventh to put the game out of reach.
Loyola freshman Amy Solava was impressive in a relief stint, scattering two hits and allowing only one run while striking out seven in 5.1 innings of work.
The Ramblers close out the home portion of their season with a single contest versus No. 15 DePaul tomorrow at 5 p.m. The game was originally scheduled for April 26 but was postponed due to rain.
