DAYTON, Ohio - One goal was all Loyola (6-2-1, 2-1 HL) needed Friday night at Alumni Field in Dayton, Ohio, as junior Mark Halma notched the game-winning goal off a corner kick from senior Keum Sung Kim to lead the Ramblers past Horizon League foe Wright State, 1-0.
Offensively, the Raiders (2-8-0, 1-1 HL) held the advantage, outshooting Loyola 13-8 for the match, but a stellar defensive effort by senior goalkeeper Brian Byrne prevented Wright State from capitalizing on any opportunities. Byrne recorded a season-high six saves and his fourth shutout of the season in 90 minutes in goal.
Halma finally broke the scoreless tie at the 53:57 mark, when he connected with Kim off a corner kick to sink the eventual game-winner. It was his first goal of the season, while Kim picked up his team-leading third assist.
Halma led the offensive effort with two shots and six Ramblers notched one shot each, with Loyola outshooting Wright State, 5-4 in the second half.
Loyola head coach Brendan Eitz was pleased with his team's effort. "I'm proud of the way we played tonight," said Eitz. "We've had trouble at Wright State in the past, so it was nice to pick up a road conference win."
The Ramblers return to action on Sunday, when they welcome League opponent Valparaiso to Loyola Soccer Park for a match beginning at 6 p.m.
