CHICAGO - Despite recording 28 shots and limiting Wright State to three, the Loyola University Chicago men's soccer team fell to WSU, 1-0, on Saturday night (Oct. 17) at Loyola Soccer Park. The Ramblers (3-5-4, 0-3-2 Horizon League) dictated the tempo throughout the match, but the Raiders (3-8-1, 2-3-1) were able to break the scoreless tie in the second half to earn the win.
Loyola out shot Wright State 17-1 in the first half, but neither team could find the back of the net. WSU goalkeeper Corey Whisenhunt did his part, making four of his eight saves in the first frame.
Wright State scored the lone goal of the match 15 minutes into the second half on a free kick by Jonah Longino just outside the box. Loyola goalkeeper Peter McKeown was issued a yellow card to set up the free kick, committing the foul on a tough play at the top of the box. Longino capitalized, scoring the game-winner as a result.
Senior Michael Ferguson finished the match with nine of the Ramblers' 28 shots, while classmate Eric Gehrig recorded eight. Gehrig had three of LU's eight shots on goal.
The Ramblers make the trip down Sheridan Road next Tuesday (Oct. 20) to take on nationally-ranked Northwestern at 7 p.m. CT.
