CHICAGO - Kristen Medrud had a pair of hits and drove in two runs, but it wasn't enough for visiting Loyola University Chicago (23-19, 11-7 Horizon) as it dropped a 6-2 decision to UIC (20-21, 12-2 Horizon) in the rubber game of a three-game series at Flames Field today.
UIC wasted no time in seizing control of the game, taking a 2-0 advantage in the bottom of the first inning thanks to a two-run home run off the bat of shortstop Brooke Frydendall. Loyola answered with a run of its own in the top of the fourth inning to cut the deficit in half as Kristen Medrud stroked a RBI single to score pinch runner Stephanie Cihlar.
The Flames put the game away in the fifth, scoring four unearned runs, with the big blow coming on a two-out, three-run homer off the bat of Shannon Kehr. Her blast skipped off the top of the wall in left center field and bounced over for a three-run roundtripper.
Loyola got a run back in the sixth on Medrud's RBI double, which scored Haley Ambrosch, but that is as close as the Ramblers would get the rest of the way.
Medrud went 2-for-3 to spark a Loyola offense that managed five hits off UIC starter Ashley Hewett.
The Ramblers play their final home games of the 2009 season this weekend when they host a three-game series versus Wright State, beginning with a doubleheader Saturday.
