Gardner Leads Loyola To Doubleheader Sweep Of Green Bay

April 18, 2012

Box Score

GREEN BAY, Wis. - Sophomore Brittany Gardner struck out 24 hitters and earned the win in both games as Loyola University Chicago (18-19, 11-6 Horizon) swept a doubleheader from host Green Bay (15-19, 4-7 Horizon) this afternoon at Ben Garot Field. The victories push Gardner's total on the year to 13, just one shy of her mark from last season (14).

Gardner was simply dominant in game one, scattering three hits and striking out a career-high 15 hitters, and the lefthander partnered with an offense that saw eight of the nine players in the lineup record at least one hit, to earn the win.

Lauren Moore's RBI double in the fourth inning broke a scoreless tie and Tarran Shaffer's single later in the inning scored Moore to give the Ramblers a 2-0 lead. Loyola padded its lead in the fifth when Jessica Balzano's single brought home Keali Engelkens who had singled earlier in the inning. A six-run seventh inning by Loyola put the game out of reach.

Balzano, Moore, Engelkens and Lauren Arceneaux recorded two hits apiece to lead Loyola, which totaled 12 hits in the opener.

In the nightcap, Gardner allowed only two hits and struck out nine, and Arceneaux's third-inning home run was the big blow in Loyola's 4-0 victory. The Ramblers tacked on a pair of insurance runs in the fifth inning to close out the scoring.

Balzano and Arceneaux added two more hits each to power Loyola to the win in game two.

Loyola and Green Bay close out the three-game series with a single game tomorrow at noon.
