CHICAGO - Lauren Moore hit a two-run home run in the third inning and Brittany Gardner took a no-hitter into the fifth as Loyola University Chicago (24-16, 12-4 Horizon) broke a mini two-game losing skid with a 2-1 win over Green Bay (12-23, 5-10 Horizon) in game one of a doubleheader this afternoon at Loyola Softball Park. Moore's 12th blast of the year gave her sole possession of the Loyola single-season record for home runs.
The game was a classic pitcher's duel between Gardner and Green Bay righthander Allison Goecks as the teams combined for just four hits on the afternoon.
Neither team recorded a hit until Moore crushed her record-setting, two-run bomb down the left field line with two outs in the bottom of the third inning. Meanwhile, Gardner retired the first 12 Phoenix batters she faced before Danielle Peerernboom hit a bloop single up the middle for Green Bay's first hit and base runner of the contest.
Green Bay mounted a late rally against Gardner in the seventh when Melissa Michalkiewicz homered to center field with one out in the seventh to cut Loyola's lead in half. However, Gardner wasn't fazed and retired Peerenboom on a groundout, then set down Miranda Reinke on strikes as the Ramblers stayed undefeated at home in Horizon League play this season (4-0).
Loyola's only hit besides Moore's game-winning homer was a lead-off double by Tarran Shaffer in the fourth.
Gardner improved to 13-8 with the win and struck out four while not allowing a walk and the lefthander threw just 78 pitches in the complete-game effort.
