CHICAGO - Visiting Tulane jumped out to an early lead and never let Loyola get over the hump as the Ramblers dropped an 83-70 decision to the Green Wave tonight at Gentile Arena. Milton Doyle scored 13 of his team-high 15 points in the second half to lead Loyola (4-2). Tulane moves to 6-1 with the win.
Tulane scored the first six points of the game as Loyola turned the ball over on four of its first five possessions. A Montel James basket got the home team on the scoreboard but the visitors stayed hot, opening a 13-4 lead on a Payton Henson basket. The Ramblers started to settle in and were within five (15-10) after a Christian Thomas jumper and an Earl Peterson dunk. Louis Dabney answered with a three-pointer but the Ramblers hung around, cutting a 10-point deficit to five courtesy of five straight Donte Ingram points. However, the Green Wave answered the spurt with another triple and took a 34-24 lead into halftime on a Dylan Osetkowski put-back in the final seconds. Both teams shot 50% or better in the period, but Tulane enjoyed a decisive 13-2 edge in both second change points and points off turnovers.
Milton Doyle picked up his third foul five seconds into the second half and Tulane extended the lead to 17 (42-25) as Loyola started the second half cold. A 12-5 Loyola run, capped by a three-pointer from Thomas, made it a 47-37 game at the 11:44 mark but the Green Wave scored the next six to rebuild the advantage. Loyola charged back again and trailed 53-43 after two Jeff White free throws but it could never get over the hump and the lead would not get under 10 points the rest of the way, with Tulane having an answer for each Rambler push.
Tulane finished the game shooting just under 53% for the game while Loyola hit its season average, connecting at a 48% clip.
Limited to just 22 minutes due to foul trouble, Doyle finished with a team-high 15 points. Ingram was terrific off the bench, scoring a season-high 14 points and adding four rebounds, while Thomas (13) gave the Ramblers a third double-digit scorer. Tulane's Tre Drye finished 7-of-7 from the floor en route to a game-high 18 points as the Green Wave enjoyed a 37-22 rebounding edge that contributed to a 21-4 advantage in second chance points.
Loyola returns to action on Saturday afternoon when it makes the short trip to UIC. Tip-off from the UIC Pavilion is set for 1 p.m. and will be televised on Comcast SportsNet Chicago.
