Southeast Missouri State Stuns Loyola, 13-3 (5)

Feb. 22, 2014

Box Score

Southaven, Miss. - Lauren Moore's two RBI in today's matchup against Southeast Missouri State broke Loyola University Chicago softball's all-time career RBI record (94), but it wasn't enough to overtake the Redhawks, who earned a 13-3 (5) win over the Ramblers behind a ten-run fifth inning. The loss was Loyola's second in the Blues City Classic in Southaven, Miss., and eighth of the year.

Southeast Missouri State took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first, starting with an Alexis Anderson walk to lead off the top of the inning. After Anderson advanced to second on a passed ball, Savannah Carpenter followed it up with a single to left field, advancing Anderson to third before she herself stole second. A Lindsey Patterson grounder to Loyola short stop Alyssa Mannucci allowed the Ramblers to throw out Anderson at home, but the next Southeast Missouri State batter, Haylee Krack, drew a walk to load the bases for Chelsea Smith. Smith's groundout to short stop scored Carpenter before another groundout ended the inning.

Loyola responded in the bottom of the frame, starting with a single from Jessica Balzano, her fourth of the weekend. After Brie Pasquale was hit by a pitch, both she and Balzano were able to steal second and third, respectively, before Lauren Moore's double down the left field line brought them both around the horn to give the Ramblers a 2-1 lead. With those two RBI, Moore effectively tied the all-time career RBI record at Loyola with a whopping 93 career RBI to her credit in Maroon & Gold.

The Redhawks continued its offensive spark in the top of the second, putting two on with two outs after Nicole Deering and Anderson hit back-to-back singles. Carpenter followed it up with a triple to right field, pushing both runs across the plate to regain the lead, 3-2.

Southeast Missouri State's lead was short-lived, however, as Lauren Zaworski launched a solo shot into right center field in the bottom of the fourth to tie the game, 3-3. The home run was her second of the season, with the first coming in Loyola's run-rule victory over Winthrop the previous weekend.

The top of the fifth inning got away from Loyola as the Redhawks scored ten runs on six hits and four walks. After a Patterson single led off the inning, Southeast Missouri State loaded the bases for Jamie Woodworth, who drew the second walk of the inning to push one across and take a 4-3 lead. Kristina Vizza was then brought onto the mound in relief of Rogers, but she too afforded the Redhawks another walk to bring around a second run. Three more singles and a fourth walk then scored four more runs before a Haylee Krack grand slam made the score 13-3.

Zaworski led the Ramblers at the plate with a 1-for-2 day that included a home run and one RBI.

Rogers took the loss in the circle for Loyola, giving up eight runs on nine hits with three strikeouts in five innings pitched.

Loyola returns to action tomorrow at 10:00 a.m. when they take on Morehead State in their final game of the Blues City Classic in Southaven, Miss.
