CHICAGO - The Loyola University Chicago softball team dropped Sunday's series finale against Southern Illinois, as the Salukis completed a series sweep with the 10-2 run-rule victory. Despite pitchers Ashley Rogers and Madison Hope giving up just two earned runs apiece, the Ramblers were plagued by fielding errors, recording four over six innings to lead to the Salukis scoring 10 runs. Annie Korth led Loyola with two hits, while Hannah Jenkins recorded her fifth home run of the season.
Southern Illinois led off the top of the first inning with a single and a walk before a one-out walk loaded the bases. The Ramblers were able to force the out at home in the next at-bat to prevent the Salukis from scoring, as the bases remained loaded with two outs. However, a pair Rambler errors in the next at-bat allowed the Salukis to score two runs and take a 2-0 lead. The Salukis then scored on a wild pitch before another fielding error, the third of the inning, increased the Southern Illinois lead to 4-0.
The Salukis added to the lead in the top of the second, as back-to-back singles and a Rambler fielding error loaded the bases with no outs. The Ramblers were able to record two outs, but then a single through the right side knocked in two runs, increasing the Saluki lead to 6-0.
At the top of the third, the Salukis led off with a double and a walk to put two runners on base before another double brought both runners home, making the score 8-0.
Madison Hope entered the game for Ashley Rogers in the fourth inning and threw two scoreless innings before the Ramblers got on the board in the bottom of the fifth on a solo home run by Hannah Jenkins. However, the Salukis added two runs in the top of the sixth, leading off the frame with a triple before a home run to left field increased the Southern Illinois led to 10-2.
The Ramblers were able to score one run in the bottom of the sixth inning on a single from Ashley Parenti, but it wasn't enough as the Salukis claimed the 10-2 run-rule victory.
Loyola is back in action on Wednesday, traveling to Indiana State to wrap up a three-game series that began on April 15 with the Ramblers splitting a doubleheader against the Sycamores at Loyola Softball Park.
