TERRE HAUTE - The Loyola University Chicago softball team dropped Wednesday's series finale to Indiana State, falling 7-6 in ten innings. The Ramblers racked up 14 hits, including home runs from Brooke Wyderski, Annie Korth and Jacquelyn Murphy. Wyderski now totals 10 home runs on the season, breaking Loyola's all-time record for most home runs in a freshman campaign.
Both teams were held scoreless until the top of the third inning, as the Ramblers got on the board first. Jacquelyn Murphy hit a one-out single and stole second before scoring on a Sycamore error, giving Loyola an early 1-0 lead.
The Sycamores struck in the bottom of the fourth, as back-to-back singles, followed by a sacrifice bunt, put runners on second and third with one out. A single down the left field line then knocked in both runners, putting Indiana State on top, 2-1.
The Ramblers responded in the top of the fifth, as Erica Nagel hit a single and stole second before scoring on a home run from Brooke Wyderski, giving Loyola the 3-2 lead. In the bottom of the frame, the Sycamores hit back-to-back doubles to knock in one run, with a fielding error on the play bringing in another run to put Indiana State on top, 4-3.
Loyola started off hot in the top of the sixth, as Annie Korth led off the frame with a home run to left center to tie the game at 4-4. Ashley Parenti then singled through the left field side before Jacquelyn Murphy homered to left field, putting the Ramblers on top, 6-4. The Sycamores cut the Rambler lead to one in the bottom of the frame, as a leadoff home run made the score 6-5. Indiana State then led off the bottom of the seventh with a solo shot to right center, tying the game and sending it into extra innings.
Neither team scored until the bottom of the tenth, as a single and a pair of walks loaded the bases for the Sycamores before a groundout brought in the winning run, giving Indiana State the 7-6 victory.
The Ramblers are back in action this weekend with a three-game series at Illinois State, beginning with a doubleheader on Saturday at noon.
