Final Team & Player Leaderboard
NORMAL, Ill. -
Junior Ben Holm and freshman Orion Yamat each carded rounds of 75 as the Loyola University Chicago men's golf team concluded play at the D.A. Weibring Intercollegiate in Normal, Ill. on Monday.
Loyola closed the event in 14th place, moving up two spots from Sunday, with a three-round total of 914 (311-298-305). The Ramblers finished in front of Valley rivals Drake (306-297-314=917) and Evansville (312-302-305=919) and just two strokes behind fellow conference foe Northern Iowa (294-308-310=912). Host Illinois State (288-287-287=862) cruised to the team title on its home course at the Weibring Golf Club (par-71; 6,915 yards), while the Redbirds' Trent Wallace (71-70-70=211) laid claim to medalist honors.
"Better play from us during the second and third rounds," Loyola Director of Golf Kyle Stefan commented. "It was tough today with the wind and the pins were difficult all weekend. I'm proud of Orion to come back after the first round and lead us. Ben Holm is close to playing very, very well. We will get back to work for the Windon (Memorial) and move forward."
Both Holm (79-76-75) and Yamat (83-73-75) continued their strong play from Sunday's second round this morning in Central Illinois. Holm's 75 marked the low-round of the event for the Alpharetta, Ga. native, who earned a share of 52nd at 230, finishing alongside senior PJ Riner (75-76-79=230) who notched a 79. Yamat continues to show promise as the fall season progresses. His four-over-par round moved the Niles, Ill. product into a tie for 60th at 231.
Sophomore Michael Valletti (80-83-76) bounced back from a pair of difficult rounds on Sunday to turn in a 76, moving himself up into a tie for 88th with a 239. Rounding out the Rambler lineup on Monday was sophomore Garret Buckley (77-73-85). Buckley recorded an 85 that brought his tally for the event to 235, which placed him in a tie for 74th.
Loyola will return to action in just under two weeks, Sept. 27-28, when it travels to suburban Glencoe, Ill. and the Lake Shore Country Club for Northwestern University's Windon Memorial.
