ITHACA, N.Y. - The Loyola University Chicago volleyball team improved to 10-2 on the season on Saturday morning with a 3-0 (25-22, 25-17, 25-16) sweep of Binghamton at the Cornell Invitational. Morgan Reardon led the Ramblers, recording her fourth double-double of the season with 11 kills and 16 digs, while Maureen Carls added nine kills and four blocks.
Binghamton jumped out to an early 7-4 lead to open set one, but Loyola rallied to score four unanswered points behind a pair of Reardon kills and one from Gabi Maciagowski to take the one-point lead. The Bearcats battled back, eventually cutting the Rambler lead to one point, but kills from Brittany Brown and Amanda Cushen, along with a pair of Binghamton errors, upped the Loyola lead to 17-12. The Bearcats then rallied to score five of the next six points, cutting the Rambler lead to one and forcing a timeout, but Loyola was able to hold on and claim set one, 25-22, to take an overall 1-0 lead.
After trading points to begin set two, Loyola slowly built a lead behind kills from Carls, Morgan Gresham, Maciagowski and Jackie Kocken before Reardon fired a pair of kills to up the score to 16-11, forcing a Binghamton timeout. Loyola then scored five of the next eight points, as Reardon recorded two kills before Carls scored three straight points, two kills and a block with Brown, to increase the lead to 21-14 and force the Bearcats to use their final timeout. After back-to-back points from Gresham, a kill and a block, a Brown kill ended set two, 25-17.
The Ramblers scored the first three points of set three, as Carls, Gresham and Brown each tallied kills, and steadily built the lead until back-to-back kills from Reardon and Maciagowski upped the score to 10-4. The teams then battled back-and-forth, with Loyola maintaining the steady six-point lead, until the Ramblers scored four unanswered points behind kills from Haley Hoffman, Brown and Gresham, followed by a service ace from Alex Nunez, to increase the lead to 23-14. Kills from Hoffman and Brown then closed out set three, giving Loyola the 25-16 victory and the overall sweep.
