BOWLING GREEN, Ohio - The Loyola University Chicago volleyball team improved to 3-2 on the season with a 3-1 (25-20, 24-26, 25-19, 25-22) victory over Bowling Green on Saturday. Five Ramblers recorded double-digit kills in the win, as freshman Amanda Cushen led the squad with 14, while Morgan Reardon and Brittany Brown added 12 and 11, respectively. Maureen Carls and Sami Hansen also added 10 kills apiece.
The first set began with Bowling Green jumping out to a 9-4 lead, forcing Loyola to use a timeout. The teams then battled back-and-forth until the Ramblers scored four straight points, led by kills from Carls and Brown and a pair of service aces from Caroline Holt, to tie the set at 14-14. The teams then traded points until Kathleen Vogel fired back-to-back service aces to give Loyola a 21-19 lead, forcing a Bowling Green timeout. The Ramblers then rallied out of the timeout, scoring four of the next five points behind another Vogel service ace and a pair of kills from Reardon to win set one, 25-20.
The two teams traded points to begin set two, with Carls, Cushen, Brown and Hansen recording kills for the Ramblers, before Bowling Green put together a three-point run to take a 14-10 lead, forcing Loyola to use a timeout. The Ramblers responded by scoring four of the next five points out of the timeout, led by kills from Hansen and Reardon and a double block from Carls and Gabi Maciagowski, to pull within one. Despite a kill from Brown, the Falcons rallied to take a 21-18 lead, forcing Loyola to use its second and final timeout. Bowling Green then went out to take the second set, 26-24, and tie the match at 1-1 overall.
The Ramblers raced out to a 6-0 lead to begin set three, led by kills from Hansen and Carls, as well as a kill and a block from Morgan Reardon. Loyola maintained the steady lead behind kills from Reardon, Brown, Cushen, Carls and Hansen before Bowling Green put together a 9-2 run to pull within two points, forcing a Rambler timeout. The Ramblers then scored four of the next five points behind kills from Carls and Brown, along with a double bock from Carls and Cushen, to increase the lead to 22-17. After kills from Hansen and Cushen and a double stuff from Maciagowski and Hansen, Loyola claimed set three, 25-19.
Despite a pair of kills from Reardon, Loyola fell behind 8-2 to open set four. Bowling Green then continued to build on the lead, upping the score to 13-6 before the Ramblers were forced to use the second and final timeout of the set. The Ramblers slowly cut the lead, as Carls and Brown each fired a pair of kills while a handful of Falcon errors made the score 20-18, forcing a Bowling Green timeout. Loyola then scored the next three points out of the timeout, led by a service ace from Maddy Moser and back-to-back kills from Cushen, to take a 21-20 lead and force Bowling Green to use its final timeout. The Ramblers then scored four of the final six points of the set to end it, 25-22, and claim the overall 3-1 victory.
