In Short
Freshman Quinn Spieker totaled a season high 16 kills as Loyola University Chicago won its third straight match at Gentile Arena with a 25-19, 25-23, 25-22 victory over Drake tonight. The win snaps the Ramblers’ (9-11, 4-3 MVC) brief two-match losing skid and Loyola improves to 4-2 in its last six contests. With the loss, Drake (11-10, 2-5 MVC) suffers its seventh setback in the last nine outings.

How It Happened
Three straight kills by Gabi Maciagowski broke a 7-7 tie and gave Loyola a 10-7 lead they would never relinquish in set one. Leading 16-14, Loyola stretched its lead to four thanks to a Morgan Reardon kill and a Bulldog error and would go on to lead by as many as six points. Reardon and Maciagowski totaled five kills apiece in set one, with Spieker adding four stops in Loyola’s 25-19 victory.

In the second set, Loyola sprinted out to an early 8-4 lead behind three kills from Spieker but Drake charged back with nine straight points to grab hold of a 13-8 advantage. Enter Jackie Kocken, who came off the bench to provide a huge spark to the Rambler lineup. The senior middle blocker tallied a kill and then teamed with Delilah Wolf on consecutive blocks as part of a 4-0 run that got the Ramblers within a point at 13-12.

Another Loyola block, this one courtesy of Lauren Stefanski and Spieker, knotted the score at 16 and back-to-back kills from Spieker and Stefanski gave the Ramblers an 18-16 lead. Drake would not go away quietly and scored five of the next six points to gather a 21-19 advantage before Loyola closed out the set on a 6-2 run to earn a 25-23 victory, that fittingly was capped off with a kill from Kocken.

Set three was a back-and-forth battle but Loyola rattled off three straight points to turn a slim one-point margin into an 18-14 lead. Once again, the Bulldogs proved pesky down the stretch and cut the gap to 23-22, but Spieker finished off the set and the match with consecutive kills for a 25-22 Loyola win.
