In Short
Gabi Maciagowski combined for 41 kills but it wasn't enough as Indiana State (9-12, 3-6 MVC) slipped past Loyola University Chicago 21-25, 25-22, 25-22, 25-22 at Gentile Arena tonight. The loss, which drops Loyola to 10-13 overall and 5-5 in Missouri Valley Conference action is just the second at home in MVC play for the Ramblers.
How It Happened
Loyola fell behind 7-3 before rallying to even set one at 10. Indiana State broke a 15-15 with three straight points to open up an 18-15 advantage. The Ramblers stormed back and tallied four unanswered points, with Sami Hansen and Delilah Wolf teaming up for a block that gave LU a 19-18 lead. After ISU evened the set at 19, back-to-back kills from Hansen gave Loyola command of the set as it held on for a 25-21 victory.
Indiana State put Loyola in a 7-2 hole to start the second set and extended the lead to as much as 15-7. Three consecutive kills by Reardon cut the Sycamores lead to 15-10 and a few points later, a pair of Quinn Spieker kills and another from Maciagowski got Loyola within 17-15. Consecutive kills from Spieker and Reardon tied the score yet again (17-17), but ISU ripped off four unanswered points to seize a 23-19 advantage en route to a 25-22 win.
Loyola led 12-9 in set three before the Sycamores rallied to grab a 15-14 lead. An ISU service error and ensuing kill from Reardon nudged Loyola ahead, 21-19. However, Indiana State finished the set with a flourish, recording six of the final seven points, which featured a pair of blocks from Sarah Peterson and Damadj Johnson, for a 25-22 victory.
The Ramblers looked to force a fifth and deciding set, where they have seen great success this season and for most of the way, it appeared the Ramblers would be going the distance. A Maciagowski kill and Reardon block turned a tie into a 13-11 Loyola lead in set four and the Ramblers held the upper hand until late in the contest. Reardon's kill broke a tie put Loyola back on top, 19-18, but ISU spun off five unanswered points to seize a 23-20 lead and never looked back en route to another 25-22 victory.
