Coach Moser's Thoughts
“I thought our veterans did a nice job of getting us out of the gate quickly in both halves. No matter whom you are playing, you have to play tough defensively as well as move and share the ball. When you’re playing back-to-back nights, you don’t want to have to play guys more than 20 minutes and we were able to accomplish that today.”
How It Happened
Loyola hit three of its first four attempts from beyond the arc and scored the first 16 points of the game before IU Northwest was able to dent the scoreboard with a pair of Darrius Davis free throws at the 11:28 mark of the first half. The RedHawks’ first field goal came 16 seconds later as Loyola held IU Northwest without a basket for the first 8:48.
Ben Richardson’s second three-pointer of the opening period put the Ramblers on top, 31-11 with 6:19 left to play in the half. The RedHawks put together a run of their own, outscoring the Ramblers 16-5 over the next 4:38 to get within 36-27 on a three by JJ Pennington.
Four straight free throws from Milton Doyle gave Loyola some cushion and were part of the Ramblers’ half-closing 9-2 run that sent the Maroon and Gold into the locker room with a 45-29 lead at the break.
Much like the first half, Loyola came out red hot at the outset of the second period. The Ramblers put the game completely out of reach by opening the half on a 22-3 run that featured 13 points from Custer as the lead ballooned to 67-32, as Loyola cruised to its second straight win to open the 2016-17 season.
