In Short...
Host Pittsburgh held the Loyola University Chicago women's basketball team to only 19% shooting from the field as it cruised to a 59-35 win this evening at the Petersen Events Center in Pittsburgh, Pa. With the victory, the Panthers improve to 3-0 on the season, while the Ramblers drop to 0-2.
How It Happened
Pittsburgh opened the game with a 7-0 spurt that was bookended by pair of Brenna Wise layups to build a seven-point edge with just under four minutes gone. Brandi Segars knocked down a mid-range jumper to put Loyola on the board at the 5:52 mark, but Loyola's offensive struggles continued throughout the opening stanza as the Panthers took a commanding 16-6 lead into the second quarter.
Back-to-back scores by Segars pulled the Maroon & Gold to within six, 16-10, with 7:59 to go in the second quarter. Pittsburgh pushed the margin back out to 10 before a pair of makes at the free throw line by Katie Salmon and a triple by Kaitlyn Williams cut the Loyola deficit down to five, 21-16, with just over six minutes to go. A Tiara Wallace bucket pulled the Maroon & Gold to within four, 24-20, at the 3:17 mark before the Panthers scored the half's final six points to take a 30-20 lead into the intermission.
As was the case to begin the game, Pittsburgh began the third quarter with a 7-0 run to stretch its lead to 37-20 with four minutes gone. A pair of Segars makes from the charity stripe put the Ramblers on the board in the second half but Loyola struggled to find any rhythm on the offensive end as the hosts held a 45-28 lead after three quarters.
Lee Williams looked to give the Ramblers a spark early on in the final frame as she drove in for two to cut the margin to 45-30. Pittsburgh answered back with another run, rattling off six straight points to open up a 51-30 edge with seven minutes remaining. Loyola would get no closer than 18 for the remainder of the night as the Panthers picked up a third consecutive win to open the season.
