In Short
Four players scored in double figures as Loyola University Chicago forced 19 turnovers and converted them into 24 points in an 88-79 victory over Washington State (3-2) this afternoon at the Paradise Jam. The win improves the Ramblers’ record to 5-1, giving them their best start through six games since going 6-0 to open the 2010-11 campaign. Loyola has now posted six wins over Power 5, Big East or Mountain West foes in the last four-plus seasons.
Coach Moser's Thoughts
“I’m proud of our guys and how we rebounded after a tough first day here against Saint Joe’s. I couldn’t be happier with the effort.”
How It Happened
Freshman Cameron Satterwhite provided a spark off the bench in the first half and he scored consecutive baskets to help spur a 10-0 Loyola run that gave the Ramblers a 17-7 advantage. Clayton Custer also notched four of his team-high 19 points during that stretch.
Washington State countered with a 17-9 run of its own and a jumper by Josh Hawkinson, who finished with 15 points and 11 rebounds, trimmed the Loyola lead to 26-24 with 4:03 left in the opening period. But, a three-pointer from Milton Doyle and minutes later, another from Donte Ingram, helped the Ramblers bump the lead back up to 38-27 and Loyola led 38-30 at the break. In Sunday’s win over Oral Roberts, Loyola used a smothering defense to force turnovers and took advantage of those miscues by turning them into points and today was no different, especially in the first half. Loyola shot 51.6 percent (16-for-31) from the field in the first period, but frustrated the Cougars by forcing 11 turnovers, converting those into 16 points.
The second half couldn’t have started any better for the Ramblers, who opened by knocking down their first four attempts from three-point range. Ingram started the barrage, Custer soon followed, then Ingram drained another and Ben Richardson closed out the flurry with a trey on his own that stretched the Loyola lead to 50-36.
The Ramblers would lead by as many as 15 points in the second half, but Washington State refused to go quietly and whittled the deficit to 78-72 before Doyle hit a fadeaway baseline jumper to slow the Cougars.
Washington State would get as close as 81-76 on a pair of Hawkinson free throws with 41 seconds remaining, but Loyola went 5-of-6 from the charity stripe over the next 20 seconds to build the lead back up to double digits and hang on for the win.
Looking At The Numbers
- Custer finished with a team-high 19 points, going 10-for-13 from the free throw stripe, and added three assists and a pair of steals.
- Ingram scored 12 of his 17 points in the second half and also added six rebounds as he fell just two points shy of equaling a career high.
- Aundre Jackson scored in double figures for the sixth straight game to open his Loyola career, finishing with 17 points, six boards and a pair of steals.
- Doyle also scored in double digits for the sixth time in as many games, totaling 14 points to go with six boards and four assists.
- The win is Loyola’s first over a current member of the Pac-12 since a 79-76 victory over Colorado on December 22, 1987.
