In Short...
Katie Salmon led a group of four Ramblers in double figures with a game-high 18 points but Troy shot just under 47% from the field as it handed the Loyola University Chicago women's basketball team a 91-67 defeat this afternoon at the San Juan Shootout in Daytona Beach, Fla. With the win, Troy moves to 4-1 on the season, while Loyola now sits at 0-5.
How It Happened
Following a Tiara Wallace jumper that put the Ramblers on the board, two Lee Williams makes from the charity stripe gave Loyola a 4-2 edge with just under two minutes gone in the first quarter. Katie Salmon brought an end to a 7-0 Troy run with the Maroon & Gold's first three of the day to tie the game at 9-9 at the 6:03 mark. Following another Salmon score that cut the Troy lead to 12-11, ArJae' Saunders connected on a jumper to spark a 9-3 spurt for the Trojans that saw them open up a 21-14 lead after one.
Troy kept its foot on the gas to begin the second frame. A Kayla Robinson triple ignited a run that saw the Trojans score 14 of the quarter's first 18 points en route to opening up a 35-18 lead with four minutes gone. Salmon converted on a layup before knocking down a pair of free throws that pulled Loyola back to within 37-25 with 4:35 to go. Citiana Negatu connected on a corner triple on the Ramblers' final possession of the half to cut the Troy lead to 43-31 at the intermission.
The Trojans came out firing again after returning from the locker room, opening up a 50-33 edge on a Harriet Winchester make from beyond the three-point arc. A mid-range bucket from Kaitlyn Williams sparked a Rambler run that saw Loyola slowly chip away at its deficit. Miya Williams rattled home a three with 4:44 to go to cut the Troy lead to 52-42. Two Negatu free throws had the Ramblers within single digits, 58-49, two minutes later. Saunders and Claresa Banks responded with back-to-back threes that helped the Trojans reestablish a 13-point advantage, 64-51, heading into the fourth quarter.
Loyola struggled to put in a dent in the Troy lead during the final frame. A split at the line by Salmon cut the margin to 15, 67-52, at the 9:11 mark. That would prove to be as close as the Ramblers would get for the remainder of the day. A post score by La'Tia Fils-Aime' pushed the Trojans' lead to 75-54 with 8:00 remaining. Troy would coast to the finish line from there as it recorded a 91-67 victory.
