In Short...
Loyola's seven-game win streak was snapped on Friday night as Ohio State swept the Ramblers, marking the team's first loss to the Buckeyes since March of 2013. With the loss, Loyola drops to 7-3 overall and 2-1 in MIVA play, while Ohio State improves to 9-3 (4-1 MIVA).
Ohio State entered the weekend as the nation's leader in team hitting percentage and managed to outhit Loyola .395 to .341 on the match. A pair of Ramblers recorded double-digit kills, as Ricky Gevis recorded 11 and Trevor Novotny added 10, while Ohio State was led by Miles Johnson, who accounted for 21 of the Buckeyes' 46 total kills.
How It Happened
The first set featured 12 tie scores and four lead changes, as the two teams spent the majority of the frame trading points. Loyola managed to up the score to 19-17 after back-to-back points, a Jeff Jendryk kill and a Ricky Gevis service ace, but Ohio State scored the next five unanswered to take its largest lead of the set. The Buckeyes never surrendered the lead and went on to claim set one, 25-22. While Loyola tallied two more kills than Ohio State, the Buckeyes had the advantage in hitting percentage, outhitting the Ramblers .357 to .281.
The second set started similarly to the first, with the teams treading sideouts until the Buckeyes scored four straight points to take a 16-12 lead. Despite kills from Novotny and Hutz, Ohio State continued to rally and scored six of the next nine points, upping the score to 22-15. Loyola managed to cut the deficit with a three-point run, including kills from Ricky Gevis and a Dane Leclair service ace, but Ohio State held on to win set two, 25-19. The Ramblers tallied three blocks en route to holding Ohio State to its lowest hitting clip of the match, but the Buckeyes still managed to claim the .296 to .280 advantage.
Ohio State started the set with back-to-back kills and never trailed, eventually taking its largest lead of the set at 16-9. The Ramblers managed to stay within a handful of points before putting together a 4-1 run, including a pair of kills from Novotny, to cut the deficit to three. A solo block from Nick Olson and a Gevis kill then cut the Ohio State lead to 20-22, but the Buckeyes held on to win set three, 25-22. Loyola once again led a balanced attack, with Novotny, Gevis, Jendryk and Olson accounting for at least three kills apiece, but the Rambler defense was unable to stop Miles Johnson, who accounted for 11 of the Buckeyes' 19 total kills.
