In Short...
Montel James gave Loyola the lead with a three-point play with 44 seconds left and the Ramblers held on down the stretch, going 4-for-4 from the free throw line to earn a key, 59-56, win over UNI tonight at Gentile Arena.
The Ramblers trailed by as many as seven points in the second half before rallying, its defense locking down on the Panthers and holding them to just 31% shooting for the game and only 26% (6 of 23) in the second half.
Milton Doyle scored nine of his team-high 13 points in the second half, including a timely three-pointer to tie the game with just over a minute left. Donte Ingram added 10 points while James (eight rebounds), Earl Peterson and Devon Turk all finished with nine points.
How It Happened
+ After playing to a 51-41 score in the first meeting, both teams stormed out of the gate, with Turk scoring LU's first nine points to give the home team a 12-9 lead at the first media timeout
+ Matt Bohannon's third three-pointer gave UNI a 23-16 lead with just over nine minutes elapsed
+ Earl Peterson capped a 6-1 spurt with a steal and lay-up to get Loyola within two and Peterson canned a triple with 32 seconds left to make it a 29-29 game at intermission
+ Paul Jesperson scored all nine UNI points - on three from downtown - in a 9-2 run to open the second half that gave the visitors a 38-31 lead
+ Peterson scored to stem the tide and the basket jumpstarted a 12-2 spurt that gave Loyola a 43-40 lead at the 12:16 mark
+ Jesperson answered with another triple to tie the game and points were extremely hard to come by for both teams the rest of the way
+ Jeremy Morgan scored inside for the Panthers - their first field goal in 8:06 - to gave them a 50-47 advantage but Ingram answered immediately to keep the deficit at one point
+ Doyle's three-pointer from right in front of the LU bench forged a 52-all deadlock with 1:12 left and, after Bohannon hit a pair from the line, James answered with a three-point play off a nice feed from Tyson Smith
+ Smith drained two free throws after a defensive stop but Washpun scored quickly at the other end to keep LU's lead at one (57-56) with eight seconds left
+ Peterson swished a pair from the stripe with six ticks remaining and Loyola elected to foul with a three-point lead
+ Washpun missed the first and intentionally missed the second, with the Panthers gaining possession with :01.4 left after a scramble under the boards
+ Their final shot - which was inside the arc - missed and Loyola earned a key victory as it heads down the stretch of conference play
Inside The Box Score
+ The win gave the Ramblers their first regular-season sweep of UNI since joining the Missouri Valley and they have won two of the three regular-season meetings at Gentile Arena
+ Turk, who scored 10 straight points in the first half on Sunday against Evansville, scored Loyola's first nine points of the game tonight
+ Loyola's second-half defense was the story again and it held UNI to 26% (6 of 23) in the second half after limiting Evansville to 24% on 6-of-25 in the final 20 minutes on Sunday
+ The Panthers drained eight from downtown but made only seven baskets from inside the arc
+ In the two meetings this season, UNI hit 15 three-pointers but only 13 two-point field goals
+ Loyola improves to 12-2 (.857) this season when shooting a higher percentage than its opponent
+ Doyle was outstanding, finishing with 13 points, seven rebounds and three steals to lead the way
The Turning Point
