Hi my name is Ricky Gevis and I am a rising junior opposite on the men's volleyball team.
We began the day at the Colosseum. We went on a guided tour and explored all that it had to offer. Being able to experience this first-hand allowed me to truly understand how remarkable the Colosseum is. Walking around and imagining this stadium full of cheering fans was an amazing experience. There was so much information about it that I never knew until our tour, such as the seating arrangements based on social status and the intricate design of the underground storage room.
After the Colosseum we went to the Roman Forum. This place was full of ruins of the unbelievable Roman architecture. I continuously tried to picture everything as it was in Roman times when everything was intact. Thinking of everything in that way helped me to develop a vivid, beautiful image of the Roman Empire. Every pillar, arch, building, and even rock contained so much history.
Later in the day we played our first volleyball match against Club Italia. We gained a lot of good experience playing against a team of this caliber. They were very talented and we played them tough. Despite our best efforts we lost 3-1. International volleyball is a different experience that many people on our team experienced for the first time. This game and the next two will help us immensely in the upcoming season.
We are now on our way to Florence and I am excited to see more of what Italy has to offer!
