In Short...
Junior Katie Grall put the Ramblers on the board in the first half before DePaul rattled off four unanswered goals to hand Loyola a 4-1 defeat this afternoon at Wish Field in Lincoln Park. With the win, DePaul improves to 3-4-2, while the Ramblers fall to 1-7-2 on the season.
How It Happened
Following an hour delay due to lightning in the area prior to kickoff, Ana Greik looked to get the Blue Demons off to an early lead in the fifth minute, only for her blast from near the penalty spot to be denied junior goalkeeper Maddie Ford. Less than 10 minutes later, senior Shelby Koch sent a cross into the box that fell to the feet of Grall. The Waukesha, Wis. native ripped her shot past Lauren Frasca, the DePaul netminder, to give Loyola a 1-0 lead.
Ford continued to stand tall between the pipes for the Maroon & Gold as the half wore on. The Bloomfield Hills, Mich. product turned away Abby Reed on a clean look from the edge of the six-yard box in the 18th minute before corralling a screamer off the foot on Alexa Ben only three minutes later. DePaul finally found its breakthrough in the 36th minute when, following a Loyola foul, Jessie Schmidt rifled a close-range try past Ford to knot the score up at 1-1 heading into halftime.
DePaul came out of the intermission with a purpose, forcing the Ramblers back into their own third early on in the second half. Ford received an assist from her teammates in the 52nd minute when Franny Cerny had her attempt cleared off the line. It proved to only be a matter of time for Cerny though as she put the hosts in front, 2-1, nine minutes later from 15 yards out. Cerny looked to have added a second tally in the 70th minute but Ford came up with a leaping save to keep the deficit at one.
With time beginning to run out in regulation, sophomore Jenna Szczesny, fresh off scoring the game-winning goal this past Sunday, took off on a great run in the 73rd minute. The Hoffman Estates, Ill. native battled a pair of Blue Demon defenders before unleashing a shot from outside the box that went just wide. DePaul would make Loyola pay shortly after as the combo of Ben and Abby Reed scored under three minutes apart to seal a 4-1 win Blue Demon victory.
Looking At The Numbers
- Today's win was DePaul's third in its last four meetings with Loyola.
- Grall's goal this afternoon was her team-best third of the season. That total is a new single-season high for the Waukesha, Wis. native, who found the back of the net twice in each of her first two seasons in Rogers Park.
- Ford finished the day with 11 saves in goal for the Ramblers, only one stop shy of her career-high of 12 that was set vs. East Carolina on Aug. 23, 2015.
