Northern Iowa rode a hot-shooting first quarter to build a double-digit lead as it defeated Loyola by a final count of 68-30 this afternoon at the McLeod Center in Cedar Falls, Iowa. With the win, the Panthers move to a perfect 8-0 in MVC play (15-4 overall), while the Ramblers slip to 1-6 (2-16 overall).
How It Happened
Brandi Segars drove in for two with three minutes gone to put Loyola on the board and snap a game-opening 7-0 spurt for the hosts. A pair of threes by Angie Davison pushed the Panther lead into double figures, 13-2, as Northern Iowa took a 21-4 advantage into the second quarter.
Consecutive scores by Lauren Segars, Kiana Coomber and Brandi Segars trimmed the Panther lead to 25-11 at the 6:17 mark of the second quarter. Madison Weekly knocked down her first triple of the afternoon to bring an end to the run and push the Panther edge back out to 30-11. Coomber added two more before the end of the half but Northern Iowa continued to operate at a high rate as it raced into the intermission up, 36-13.
Both teams came out cold to begin the second half, going a combined 0-of-7 to begin the third quarter. Tiara Wallace received a friendly bounce on a long two to cut the Panther lead to 41-16 with 6:00 remaining. Northern Iowa would go on to score the quarter’s final 10 points to take a 51-16 lead.
Coomber rattled home a jumper to provide Loyola with its first points of the fourth quarter with just under a minute gone, slicing the Northern Iowa lead to 53-19. Kaitlyn Williams connected the Ramblers first three of the day two minutes later, pulling the Maroon & Gold to within 55-29, but that proved to be as close as Loyola could get for the remainder of the afternoon.

- Coomber led the way for the Ramblers with a game-best 10 points and a season-high 12 rebounds to notch the first double-double of her collegiate career.
- Northern Iowa more than lived up to its billing as one of the MVC’s top defensive teams as it held the Ramblers to only 26% shooting (11-of-43) from the field.
- Davison and Taylor Hagen led a balanced Panther attack with nine points apiece.
