Four Ramblers reach double figures in kills

Box Score (PDF)

In Short…

Four Ramblers reached double figures in kills but Loyola University Chicago dropped its second five-set match in many nights, falling to visiting Indiana State, 25-22, 18-25, 17-25, 25-16, 13-15, this evening inside Gentile Arena.  The loss sees the Ramblers drop to 1-18 on the year and 0-8 in Missouri Valley Conference play.

How It Happened
Both teams struggled to gain separation early on in the first set.  Following a service ace by Indiana State's Rachel Griffin that knotted the score up at 17-17, a Delilah Wolf kill sparked a 3-0 Rambler run that saw Loyola open up a 20-17 edge.  The Sycamores would pull even at 21-21 on a Loyola attack error before Gabi Maciagowski put Loyola back in front, 22-21.  A kill by Haley Hoffmann capped off a set-ending 4-1 spurt that saw the Maroon & Gold pick up a 25-22 win.

With the second set sitting at 10-10, Indiana State used a 5-1 run to open up a 15-11 edge following a Cassie Kawa kill.  Kills by Elle Van Grinsven and Wolf cut the deficit back to down to three on two separate occasions.  The Sycamores put the frame away with a 6-0 run that pushed their lead to 24-15 en route to a 25-18 victory.

Four-straight Sycamore points early in the opening stages of the third set helped push Indiana State out to a 5-2 edge.  Hoffmann chipped the margin down to 6-4 ahead of a run that saw the visitors record six of the set's next eight points as the deficit grew to 13-6.  Loyola closed to within three late in the set but the Sycamores rattled off four unanswered points to close out a 25-17 triumph.

For a second-straight night, Loyola found itself with its back to the wall heading into the fourth set.  With Indiana State holding on to a slim 7-6 lead, Loyola rattled off four straight points, the last of which came on a Wolf kill, to surge in front, 10-7.  Back-to-back kills from Nikkie White pulled the Sycamores level at 11-11 but Loyola had an answer as it ripped off a 5-0 run that included a Van Grinsven ace to open up a 16-11 advantage.  The Ramblers would go on to cruise to a 25-16 victory to force a deciding fifth set.

The fifth set was a seesaw affair that saw neither team own a lead of larger than three points.  Indiana State took advantage of a Loyola attack error to open up a 7-4 lead before Loyola roared back to even the set up at 8-8 on a Morgan Gresham kill.  Loyola took a pair of one-point leads on kills from Van Grinsven and Maciagowski but the Sycamores used a crucial 3-0 run to take a 13-11 lead.  The Ramblers pulled to within one on a pair of occasions but White delivered the night's deciding strike to send the visitors home with a 15-13 win.
