In Short…
Tommy Katsiyiannis scored the game's deciding goal four minutes into the second overtime as Northwestern picked up a 2-1 win over the Loyola University Chicago men's soccer team this afternoon at Martin Stadium in Evanston, Ill. The win sees the Wildcats move to 6-10-0 (1-6-0 B1G), while the Ramblers now sit at 6-6-3 (2-3-1 MVC).
How It Happened
Freshman goalkeeper
Evan Konermann was called into action in the 10
th minute of play on a rain-soaked day in Evanston, collecting Mattias Tomasino's attempt. Fellow freshman
Liam Woehrle notched the Ramblers' first shot on goal eight minutes later, only to see his try turned away by Robbie White, the Northwestern netminder. Junior
Fabian Lifka looked to send Loyola into halftime with the lead but was unable to best White as the two local rivals headed to the intermission scoreless.
Northwestern jumped in front three minutes into the second stanza. John Moderwell sent a cross into the box that found the head of Ty Seager, who headed in at the far post to give the hosts a 1-0 lead.
Finding itself in a one-goal hole, Loyola amped up its attack and was rewarded in the 76
th minute. Sophomore
Aidan Megally used a header of his own off of a long service from freshman
Giann Magno to put the Ramblers back on level terms, 1-1. Senior
Kyle Thomson had a chance to potentially end the game in regulation in the 81
st minute from the penalty spot following a Wildcat foul inside the 18-yard box, but sent his attempt off the crossbar.
With time winding down in the first overtime, Northwestern was whistled for another foul inside the box. White would come up with an impressive save of redshirt junior
Grant Stoneman's initial attempt from the penalty spot before parrying away follow-up shots by both Stoneman and junior
Alec Lasinski, respectively. Katsiyiannis would deliver the final strike in the 104
th minute, finishing on a fast break to seal a 2-1 win for Northwestern.
